Riverkeepers: High Waters Don't Deter 20th Annual Cleanup
For 20 years now they've cleaned up the AuSable River around Labor Day.
And though Cleanup day dawned bright and sunny, heavy rains over prior days brought water levels up and made wading — and spotting lost flip-flops, tossed beer cans and other junk — more difficult this year.
But what Josh Greenberg, of Gates AuSable Lodge, calls a 'maintenance' effort continued. Armed with trash bags and poker sticks, volunteers nearly filled a dumpster when the trash toting teams rendezvoused back at the lodge for music and a Bar-B-Que.
Sponsored by Anglers of the AuSable, volunteers worked all three major branches of the AuSable and returned the stream to its natural state, for, as Greenberg said, "When they say the river looks beautiful — you don’t say that if you’re casting to a fish rising in front of a styrofoam cooler in a log jam."

The Riverkeepers series on AuSableTrout.com explores the work of organizations and volunteers who do good work for Michigan's northern rivers. We hope you'll consider contacting one of these organizations to join or volunteer. And if you have a good 'Riverkeeper' idea, please let us know at info@AuSableTrout.com.
